Like all respiratory infections, COVID-19 places huge stress on the lungs and can trigger lung damage even in healthy individuals. Naturally, this risk was expected to increase multifold for patients with lung problems or infections at the starting of the pandemic. But in a rude shock, lung transplant surgeries increased in Hyderabad by 10 times, according to renowned lung transplant surgeon, Dr Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale.

The COVID-19 pandemic that fell out of nowhere has become a medical emergency. Though many individuals who succumbed to the infection had an optimal recovery, not everyone had similar recuperation. Many patients survived on ventilators, few of them suffered severe lung damage were and are still in need of lung transplant surgeries.

While getting a lung donor in itself is a tough job even in normal situations, the pandemic further increased the odds. Despite this government organ programs with the help of lung transplant surgeons in Hyderabad were able to perform more than 43 lung transplantation surgeries in Hyderabad. Despite this, there are still many patients waiting for lung donors right now in Hyderabad.

“Due to the pandemic it was very difficult to procure lung donors, the expensive lung transplantation procedures place a large financial burden too. However in Hyderabad, we have some of the best lung transplant surgeons in India supported by advanced medical facilities which help a lot during this pandemic”, said Dr Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale.
