On 24th of June, 2012, Dr Gokhale addressed a gathering of nearly 250 doctors at a Cardiology Update meeting held by Yashoda hospitals at Hotel Novatel, Hyderabad. He delivered a lecture on” Surgical Options for Heart Failurein Indian Scenario”. He pointed out that in India, as the incidence of Diabetes, Hypertension and heart diseases are increasing, Heart Failure has become a very common clinical problem. Optimal medical treatment is the key for all these patients.
However if the heart has become very weak, then some of these patients require surgery to get better. However many of the doctors themselves are not aware of the various surgical options available in India and the patients are not being informed of these options. He said, for example, many of the heart specailists themselves are not aware that options like Heart Transplantation and implantation of Assist Devices(VADs) are available in some centers in India. When these procedures are done in timely fashion, many of these patients recover and can have nearly normal life.
