HYDERABAD: In a first of its kind surgery in Andhra Pradesh, doctors implanted a ‘Heart Assist Device’ to save the life of a 63-year-old heart patient. P Kasturi, a homemaker from A S Rao Nagar, Secunderabad, underwent the complicated surgery at a private hospital in the city on July 10. Doctors said that Kasturi was suffering from a heart valve problem on the left side with an extremely poor heart function.

The surgery was performed by replacing the aortic valve (valve on the left side of the heart) by the heart assist device. “She was suffering from severe narrowing of aortic valve and her pumping chamber was very weak. The patient developed severe breathing difficulty few days ago and had to be put on a ventilator,” said Dr A G K Gokhale, cardiothoracic surgeon. As her breathing and blood pressure were not improving, balloon dilatation of the valve was performed.
