Dr. Gokhale said the need for awareness is more now. Donate organs, save lives he gave a call. Organ Donation means giving a second life to somebody, he informed. There are many organs of brain dead are wasted. Awareness is the key to help people come forward and donate organs of brain dead. There needs to be a people’s movement for organ donation. One should know intricacies of Organ Donation. Lot of people must come forward to donate Organs, he said.
Awareness for the organ donation is the lowest in the country. Only 0.16 person per ten lakh Indian donated organs in the last year.
More than five lakh people are said to be dieing every year because of shortage of organs, of which two lakh for Liver failure, fifty thousand due to heart failures, nearly two lakh for kidney failures. Nearly ten lakh are waiting for Corneas. The simple solution lies in taking a decision to donate organs.
Nearly one lakh Indians are brain dead every year. But only 200 have donated their organs in the last year. Many experts in the industry believe that nearly half of the organ requirement needs can be fulfilled or met by organs harvested from the dead of road accidents.
